Election of 1876 tilden gets popular vote and hayes gets electoral vote. Democrats take control and hayes removes troops from the south. There is a shift in power in the national government. Southern influence in washington is reduced in the 19th century. Sharecropping spreads across the south and there are more whites than blacks. There is a continued dependence on cotton which leads long years of poverty in the south due to cotton prices: racial: freedom comes out of this because of the emancipation.
