The student and women"s movements: student movements. Kids of world war ii vets got to go to college. After gi bill, new students faculty and curriculum at colleges. Emphasis was on getting an education and contributing to society. Became involved with the civil rights movement: sds. Leaders wrote a draft of a manifesto who wanted participatory democracy. Lots of students were taking part in anti-vietnam war protests. Thought they had to educate the people on what was going on in vietnam. In some cases, president johnson sent some of his people into these teach ins to counter the arguments. The students weren"t able to change anyone"s mind, they discovered that people disagreed with the students arguments and didn"t listen to them: the counterculture. The counterculture rejected all of the values of american society. Moved away from what was acceptable in society. Rock and roll and other artists like jimi hendrix, people doing drugs like lsd.
