When first arriving to vietnam caputo"s attitude is positive and anxious. Positive since it was the beginning of the thing he"s been training for and that this would be a short war won and anxious to experience action. After months of walking through constant rain, disease, bugs, and snipers, caputo"s enthusiasm starts to deteriorate. He says he gets to know death personally. he describes the smell of the bodies and the title of the death they"re given, killed in action, and contemplates the vague meaning of it. This job sinks caputo into depression and anxiety attacks. Here as he adds up the causalities consistently does he begins to question what these men are dying for.
