Abraham lincoln and reconstruction (developed 1/3 policies for reconstruction) People in the confederacy: one-tenth of the voting population (white men) have to take an oath of allegiance before they can start reorganizing their state, which means (a) abolition of slavery and (b) repute the idea of succession. Louisiana was fastest to get readmitted according to lincoln"s policy; others soon followed. Lincoln gets assassinated and andrew johnson is elected. Surprisingly, his policy was more lenient than lincoln"s already loose policy. He appointed provisional governors to reorganize the states don"t even need 10% to take oath. By 1860, elite groups vote (white males who meet property requirements) By 1865, thirteenth amendment is added to constitution, abolishing slavery in all of united states (not like emancipation proclamation) Basically gives republicans more power b/c fewer democrats will be coming into office w/ the population decrease.
