Document Summary

Immigration to the west followed two basic phases: Many came for the gold rush, encouraged people to go into mining. Takes longer for news of the gold rush to reach china, takes them longer to get there, they ultimately miss the gold rush and try to make money off the remnants. Gave people the impression that the chinese population had lower standards than white people and that they were satisfied doing that. Only about 2-5000 chinese immigrants came to mine. Most came because of the transcontinental railroad because it needed workers, over. Found that since they were smaller and weighed less, that they were perfect for some of the more dangerous jobs. Would lower chinese workers in baskets down a cliff to where they wanted to railroad would be. Would put dynamite in the cliff and hopefully they were lifted up. Different situation from what we had in the midwest and the northeast.
