Mending a divided nation: reconstruction, 1865-1877: abraham lincoln and reconstruction. Johnson was opposite of lincoln but supported union still. Made readmission to the union easier on states, granted broad amnesty. Appointed governors to the states to be reorganized. By 1865 all states except texas were readmitted. A. thirteenth admendment- abolishes slavery in the united states instead of states having the right. Freedman"s bureau- created to assist blacks in transition from slavery to freedom. Never got a lot of funding, and congress wanted to make it more effective and johnson vetoes their bills to help civil rights of blacks in the south. B. fourteenth admendment- the rights of citizenship cannot be abridged by race. Blacks can now own property and other rights but not right to vote.
