Cold war takes shape: truman at the helm. Countries now have incentive to buy from us. Conflict becomes official: berlin airlift (1948-9, stalin closes land traffic to berlin. Restrict western powers from reaching the city: truman wishes to supply west germany by flying them into the city, eventually stalin ends the blocking of travel by roads, nato (1949) v. warsaw pact (1955) Korean war: proxy war of the cold war, 2 countries with nuclear weapons can"t directly fight each other, so they become sucked into smaller conflicts, north koreans push south down the peninsula almost off the continent. Truman believes that if he appeases stalin, he"ll become like hitler. Therefore he sends in un soldiers: mao gets involved and pushes more chinese soldiers. Truman pushes back to a standoff: mcarthur disagrees and says there"s no substitute for victory. 2nd new deal: social security act/wpa (expanding public works project)/wagener act . Positions/roles played by herbert hoover that brought him popularity.
