The nlu had ideals such as the eight hour workday, workers" cooperatives, greenbackism, and equal rights for women and african. The nlu disbanded in 1872 when the head of the union died. However, the nlu was influential in getting congress to enact the eight-hour workday for federal employees and repeal the 1864 contract labor act. (this. Act stated that employers were allowed to import immigrant workers by paying their passage to america.
