HIST 2057 Chapter : Hist 2057 Lesson 16
Document Summary
Wade-davis bill- passed by the u. s. congress to set a reconstruction policy. It was co- sponsored by sen. benjamin wade and rep. henry w. davis to counter pres. Lincoln"s plans for readmitting southern states after the american civil war. The bill called for provisional military government of the seceded states, an oath of allegiance from a majority of the state"s whites, and new state constitutions that would abolish slavery and disqualify confederate officials from holding office. Lincoln considered the bill too harsh and allowed it to expire by using a pocket veto. Compromise of 1877- in order to settle the contested 1876 election, a bargain was struck that also ended reconstruction. Democrat samuel j. tilden led republican rutherford b. hayes in popular votes, and 203-165 in the electoral college, but violence in south carolina, Florida, and louisiana left 20 electoral votes in doubt.
