Document Summary
When frederick"s master/father died he was then owned by his first master"s son-in-law. Frederic knew how to read he would often teach other slaves and was caught doing so. Frederick was sent to a professional slave breaker named edward covey. Covey did many things in order to break douglass that involved covey tearing his clothes off, working him very hard, and even physically abused him with a whip many times. There were times when douglass almost broke, but he stood his ground. And when he couldn"t take it anymore frederick fought back and after the fight. Then time had passed and frederick rallies a group of slaves together and escape. And i agree with this statement because slaves back then weren"t just classified as another race they were even claimed as a different species and some white people tried using religion to justify their actions.
