Document Summary

Chapter 3 textiles, fibers, and their properties. Fibers grown or developed in nature in recognizable forms. Fibers are made from chemical compounds produced in manufacturing facilities: original form not recognizable as a fiber. Look for table 3. 1 in book about all fibers. Physical structure: physical structure - this can be evaluated with the naked eye or a microscope. Polymerization: the process of joining many small molecules (monomers) to form one large compound, degree of polymerization - per number of monomers in the polymer. Stretching and drawing - increases orientation and crystallinity which makes it more compact and stronger. Aesthetics: cover - ability of a fiver to conceal or protect, translucence - ability of a fiber to allow light to pass through. Durability: abrasion resistance - the ability to withstand rubbing, folding, and friction, some are abrasion resistant and some are not, and there are finishes that help with this.
