Document Summary

People have their reasons for being crazy, some are insane because of others, while some have drove themselves insane. Charlotte perkins gilman illustrates a woman who drives herself to insanity by staring at the yellow wallpaper, not listening to her husband, and not escaping her imprisonment when she has the chance. The acts of her husband john contribute to her insanity, but she must ultimately be held responsible for how she turns out. John forces his wife, the narrator of the story, to spend her time in an old nursery room with yellow wallpaper. The room also has a window covered with bars. While in the room, the narrator writes in her journal and stares at the yellow wallpaper. Writing and staring drive the woman crazy because she contains her thoughts into this journal, but all she can think about is this hideous yellow wallpaper. The more she writes and stares at the wallpaper, the crazier she gets.
