Perhaps their ancestors did not have access to much food, so they are genetically predisposed to burning less calories. Metabolism is a big factor in our weight. Our basal metabolic rate is the amount of calories it takes for your body to maintain basic essential functions. The bmr plus the resting metabolic rate and the exercise metabolic rate determines how many calories our body burns per day. Our bmr slows down as we age, so we have to focus more on our exercise metabolic rate in order to maintain a health weight.
