Definitions: anatomy : the study of the structure and the relationship of those structures to each other, physiology: the study of the function of those body parts, dissection: carefully cutting apart the body to observe the structure. Anatomical terminology: anatomical position: standing with palms facing out (forward, regional names: Planes and sections: parasagittal: divide the body in unequal halves, frontal plane: divide the body into front and back. Body cavities: look at table on slide 17. Cranial cavity: brain, vertebral canal, meninges: protection. Thoracic cavity: pleural cavities- the lungs, mediastinum- middle part of the cavity, pericardial cavity- around the heart. Abdominopelvic cavity: abdominal cavity, pelvic cavity. Thoracic and abdominal is separated by the diaphragm. Serous membrane- very thin and slippery membrane that line the walls of the thoracic and abdominal cavities: parietal- lines the cavity itself, visceral- lines the organ itself. Pleura- the lungs; there is some fluid in those cavities: visceral- the lungs itself, parietal- the cavity.
