Wegener proposed pangea- one large continent existed 200 million years ago. Plant and animal fossils indicate different climate than today. Same fossils found on continents that today are widely separated. -alfred wegener"s theory of con drift was out of favor with the scientific community until new tech provided evidence to support (power point) - the ideas of con drift and seafloor spreadingwere tied together in the theory of plate tectonics. Tectonic system is powered by inner core heat crust>mantle(magma)>outer core(liquid)>inner core(solid) Some parts of the mantle are warmer than others, and convection currents from when warm mantle material rises and cool material falls. Above the mantle floats the cool rigid crust. This field has observed the rates at which plates spread, and has determined the calaboration of the geological time scale, and the reconstruction of the continents (palaios=accient) The lithospheric plates interact with the neighboring plates in several way. Divergent continental crust-the rift valley of east africa.
