Document Summary

Psychological disorders have been associated with evil in the past. Even in prehistoric times, people drilled holes in the skulls to release demons . The end of the 18th century slowly brought about change in the treatment of mentally ill. First textbook of psychiatry: emil kraepelin, published in 1883. First classification system to establish the organic nature of mental illness: included two major groups: dementia praecox (schizophrenia) and manic-depressive psychosis. Psychotherapy: treatment methods aimed at making people feel better and function more effectively. In actuality, many treatment plans are a combination of some form of biomedical and psychotherapy: major depression: cbt + carefully monitored medication. Psychoanalysis: goal: to bring unconscious conflicts, usually from childhood, into consciousness. Patient learns that conditions that caused conflict no longer exist. Permits a release of tension and anxiety. Humanistic therapies: we all have the potential to become unique and valuable people. Cody, who has a hard time putting thoughts and feelings into words.
