Document Summary
Consciousness the awareness of the sensations, thoughts, and feelings being experienced at a given moment. Consciousness- emerges from the interaction of individual brain events ( like a chord that emerges from different notes) Controlled processes focused attention; high level of concentration. Automatic processes- some awareness but minimal attention required (day dreaming; auto pilot) Attention is the internal process people use to set priorities for mental functioning. One method is called dichotic listening- two ear tasks. The resources of the brain and nervous system are limited: send different information into the ears at the same time to see which one people are really listening to. Is hypnosis an altered state of consciousness: plunging hand into ice water and not feeling any pain, social influence theory. Imaginative actors playing a social role: divided consciousness, theory: hypothesis is a special state of dissociated (divided) consciousness, hypnosis and memory, memories we cannot access, memories refreshed by hypnosis are not reliable.
