Consciousness: the realm of psychology is consciousness -william james, consciousness is not a single stream but multiple channels. Each channel handling a specific task: the biggest problem is defining consciousness, definition- our awareness of everything around us and inside our minds at any given moment. Waking consciousness: thoughts, feelings and sensations that are clear and organized, our everyday consciousness. Altered states of consciousness: shifts in the quality or pattern of mental activity, ex: day dreaming, hypnotic states, meditative states, increased alertness, divided attention, and sleep. Ex: sleep patterns of animals: restorative theory of sleep, sleep is necessary for physical health. Rem sleep, which is more than half of the time they are sleeping it is rem sleep: stages of sleep, n1 (previously stage 1): light sleep, may experience: Hypnagogic images: hallucinations or vivid visual events.
