Will direct energies on mastering challenges they encounter in school & in their social worlds. Success in meeting these brings feelings of mastery & proficiency & growing sense of competence. Difficulties in this stage lead to feelings of failure & inadequacy. Industriousness more closely associated with adult success than intelligence or family background. During mid-childhood shift in how children view themselves. Ex: 6 y o describes self as fast runner (physical trait) 11 y o describes self as friendly/smart (inner, psychological traits) As children age, views of selves become more differentiated. Academic self-concept influenced by their abilities in english, math, hx, etc ( i am good in math but not so much in english ) Social self-concept influenced by peers & significant others (peer influence - define self in relation to peers)
