Document Summary

Sometimes between 4 and 8 weeks following conception, the sry gene on the y chromosome signals the male embryo"s body to begin secreting hormones called androgens. If androgens are not present, female genitals develop no matter what the embryo"s chromosomal status. Female embryos that are exposed to androgens can develop male-appearing external genitalia: mothers expose they infants to androgens through medications or a genetic disorder called congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Prenatal androgens also influence the developing brain and may play a role in the development of sex differences in cognitive functioning and in the development of sexual orientation. A person must have two recessive genes to have type o blood. When a person"s phenotype includes either type a or type b blood, one of the child"s blood-type genes must be for that type. Autosomal dominant disorders: huntington"s disease, high blood pressure, Autosomal recessive disorder: pku, sickle-cell disease, cystic fibrosis, tay- Sachs disease, kidney cysts in infants, and albinism.
