REL 2000 Chapter : Religious Nationalism Zionism
Document Summary
Zionism- meant support for the creation of a jewish state, now means support for israel. A good example of religion defining a community. Sense that israel/palestine is/was important: promised by god, temple, etc, rabbis developed a way to practice outside of this place. Influenced by the dreyfus affair: his call based on secular focus- jews as a culture/national (rather than religious) community, reason for this is because jews were unsafe. Religious objections: originally, reform jews rejected zionism, cleary outlined in pittsburgh platflorm (1885, this largely changed after the creation of israel, orthodox objections, minority opinion, conflict proves god"s displeasure. Justification for their anti-zionism is that only god can lead them back.
