SOCL 2001 Chapter : Chapter 9 In Class
Document Summary
Stratification- a socioeconomic system that divides society"s members into categories ranking from high to low, based on things like wealth, power, and prestige. Stratification in this country is different than that in other countries: wealth- the value of money and assets a person has from, for example, inheritance. Income- the $ a person earns from work or investments: power- how many people do you manage, what do you have control over, etc, social status. In society, you have people who have lots of wealth, power, income, etc. On the contrary, you also have those who do not. A lot of people don"t really see in this country a class system the same as you would see in india"s caste system, for example. A caste system is a system in which people are born into a social standing that they will retain their entire lives.
