Document Summary
Welfare is the establishment of a minimal level of well being and social support for all citizens, sometimes referred to as public aid (webster"s dictionary). The history of welfare began in the early 1930"s during the great depression (christopher 4). However, in today"s society to be eligible for welfare, some states are now requiring that the applicant must agree to take a drug test. This new requirement angered many people because they argued that agreeing to be drug tested, in order to receive assistance from the government, is nibbling on their rights as united states citizens. In america, citizens are protected by a doctrine called the united states. In this doctrine is a list of amendments and according to the 4th amendment, Johnson 2 unreasonable search and seizure (in this case drug testing) is considered unconstitutional (phillips 2). Although some citizens revolt against the new requirement others applaud it.
