Document Summary
Poverty line - a federally defined income limit defined as the cost of an "economy" diet for a family, multiplied by three. Absolute poverty: minimum level of substance that no family should be able to live below. Relative poverty: a state of poverty when we compare ourselves to others around us. Social class - an ordering of all persons in a society according to their degrees of economic resources, prestige, and privilege. The family tied to class location of the father. Now, more appropriate to focus on the family unit. Women tend to think they"re equal to their spouse. Men tend to think their income from their occupation weighs more on their families social class. Three models of how families decide on their social class: Status-borrowing model - (back to breadwinner-homemaker concept) women would borrow their husband"s status. Independence model - each spouse thinks only of his/her characteristics.
