SOCL 3101 Chapter : Classical Sociological Theory
Document Summary
If healthy, the body parts are all in harmony, but there is still a hierarchy. If we treat the society like the body, then we can treat and speak of society as being healthy or not (sick) In the beginning, there was a state of nations: state of nature. Individuals as atoms: speak of individuals as their own units. It is better to die on your feet than submit on your needs, because you have glory. Implicitly democratic: war of every person against every other person. Implicit democracy is now explicit: calculation of pleasures and pains, every person has particular utilities (things we want) and we can measure that. If every person has the right to the same stuff, then it makes sense to distribute it evenly: criticisms of utilitarianism, considered a progressive idea, but people almost immediately criticized it.
