Document Summary
At the end of last class, we were talking about stigma, and the ways that people can handle it, different ways they can control information about themselves. We talked about passing, but also the problems that are associated with it. And for some people, if they can"t hide their stigma, passing is simply out of the question and not an option for them. But other people, because they don"t want to deal with those problems, even if they could pass, they may decide not to. The other option goffman talks about is called covering. Covering is admitting the stigma, either explicitly or implicitly, when engaging in some strategy to make it less intrusive, in a social interaction. When a person with a stigma is interacting with other people, those other people, initially their focus is going to be attracted to that stigma.
