Major perspective while others think of it as a version of symbolic interactionism. Structural functionalism and conflict theory are taken to be two of the three major theoretical perspectives in sociology. The third one of the big three is symbolic interactionism. It is the idea of an early american sociologist by the name of george: mead. It is, of the three major theoretical perspectives the one that deal with sociology at the micro level (the focus of individuals in small groups) rather than the macro level (conflict theory and structural functionalism). During this next section of the course, were going to talk about symbolic interactionism along with some other related theories. Erving goffman"s ideas of dramaturgy, which some people consider to be a fourth. Symbolic interactionism is a name that was given to mead"s work by one of his students, herbert blumer, who made a career trying to explain mead"s work, and wrote numerous papers, but never wrote a book.
