Chapter 5: Short-Term Memory and Working Memory
• Sensory Memory:
▪ Iconic Memory:
• brief sensory memory for visual stimuli
• corresponds to the sensory memory stage of Atkinson and
Shiffri’s odal odel
▪ Echoic Memory:
• the persistence of sound
• lasts for a few seconds after the original stimulus
• you saying what before you actually register what a person says
▪ This experiment reveals the LARGE capacity of sensory memory, but its
duration is BRIEF
• Short-Term Memory:
o the system that is involved in storing small amounts of information for a brief
period of time
o Responsible for a great deal of our mental life
▪ contains everything we think about at a particular moment
▪ our window to the present
o Recall:
▪ subjects are presented with stimuli and then after a delay are asked to
report back as many of the stimuli as possible
