Chapter 6: Long Term Memory Structure
• What happens to episodic and semantic memories as time passes?
o Way to assess this = p
▪ resent stimuli and then, after some time passes, ask a subject to recall
the stimuli or to indicate whether they recognize the stimuli
▪ Shows that subjects forget some of the stimuli, with forgetting increasing
oer loger periods of tie, ut forgettig is NOT alays a all-or-
othig proess
o There are different degrees to forgetting and remembering:
▪ 1. Familiarity:
• person seems familiar and might know name but cannot
remember specific details about experiences with that person
• associated with SEMANTIC
▪ 2. Recollection:
• remembering specific experiences related to the person
• related to EPISODIC
o Ways of remembering assessed using remember/know procedure
▪ Subjects are presented with a stimulus they have encountered before
and are asked to respond:
• REMEMBER if the stimulus is familiar and they remember the
circumstances under which it was presented
