Chapter 11: Language
• Speech – Perceiving Individual Words in Sentences:.
o People pronounce things in many different ways
▪ words become much more difficult to understand when taken out of
context
▪ Experiment that showed that the ability to perceive words in
conversations is aided by the context provided by the words and
sentences that make up the conversation
o Amazing that sounds of speech are easier to understand when we hear them
spoken in a sentence because words do not sound as if they are separated by
spaces when this is the case
o Speech Segmentation:
▪ ability to perceive individual words even though there are often no
pauses between words in the sound signal

o 1. Knowledge of word meaning
