PSY30400 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Temporal Lobe
Chapter 9: Knowledge
• Semantic Category Approach:
▪ proposes that there are specific neural circuits in brain in some specific
categories
▪ There are a limited number of categories that are innately determined
because of importance to survival
▪ Experiment showing that there is a genetic mechanism that supports face
recognition
▪ While this approach focuses on areas of brain that are specialized to
respod to speifi types of stiuli, also ephasizes that rai’s respose
to items from particular category is distributed over many cortical areas
• Example:
o identifying faces may be based on activity in face region of
temporal lobe, but also depends on activity in areas that
respond to other things like emotions
o Multiple-Factor Approach:
▪ focuses not on brain areas or networks that are specialized for specific
concepts but on searching for more factors that determine how concepts
are divided up within a category
▪ While it is true that members of specific categories do share similar
perceptual attributes, it is also clear that we need to use more than just
one or two features when grouping objects in terms of similarity
