Alyosha returns to the monastery where father zossima is in a very unhealthy state. Alyosha receives a letter from lise, the daughter of madame hohlakov. She tells him that she loves him and has loved him her whole life. She wants him to leave the monastery (zossima has also just told alyosha that he needs to leave the monastery) and be with her.
