He fell in love while she was with another man but he never knew. Zossima challenges the girl"s fianc to a duel and he must accept because he does not want his wife to know that he was a "coward" One day before the duel zossima lashes out at his servant afanasy and beats him. The next morning he is so ashamed and remembers the words of his brother markel "my dear ones, why do you wait on me, why do you love me, am i worth your waiting on me?" Zossima runs to afanasy"s room and bows to him in apology.
