The party begins when all of the things dmitri has ordered arrive at the tavern. Grushenka sits observing everything she is "falling in love" with dmitri as she watches him dance and sing. Grushenka keeps calling dmitri over to whisper to him he tells her his whole plan to kill himself and she tells him that is foolish. Dmitri walks outside for fresh air and feels uncomfortable thinking about. Talking about the polish man from 5 years ago. Grushenka realizes that she only loved the polish man because he was the first man to love her. She professes her love for dmitri "will you forgive me?" She offers to be his slave, apologizes profusely for mistreating him . Grushenka says she is going to become a nun one day. Police captain mihail makarovitch shows up to arrest dmitri for murdering.
