Ch 13 - voice + worship: tradition and individuality in medieval chant. Sung worship is a shared feature among many cultures. Culture shaped by monasteries - religious communities - starting in the middle. Music was the core of christian prayer. Women and men preserved it, (some women were nuns) Middle ages men + women devoted themselves to prayer and church. Prayer services thru the day, mass = daily public service. Ppl could participate in religion along w/ physical labor to bring the church 9085 Hildegard of bingen was a poet + prophet and composer. Given to the church at age 14. Plainchant is a single-line melody, it is monophonic. Represent the starting point of artistic creativity in western music. It became necessary to organize the music into a liturgy - the set order of church services and the structure of each service. Pope gregory the great is credited w codifying these melodies, known as gregorian chants.
