Surgical classification: diagnostic (breast biopsy, curative (removal of gallbladder, palliative (debulking of tumor to reduce pain, preventive (colonoscopy-polyps, explorative (exploratory lab-abdomen, cosmetic/reconstructive (breast implants) In hospital: emergent (life-threatening, elective (planned, same day admission, ambulatory, outpatient. Role of the nurse: preparing the client for surgery, surveillance during surgery, preventing complications, facilitating recovery. Information and assessment: develops relationship, establish baseline, medication history, allergies, review of systems, physical exam. Reaction to surgery: stress response, anxiety, emotions are often intensified in the older adult. Common fears: fear of death, fear of pain and discomfort, fear of mutilation/altered body image, fear of anesthesia, fear of disruption of life pattern. Preoperative teaching: includes information about, preoperative routines, time of surgery and postoperative recovery, postoperative routines. Incentive spirometry: deep breathing, leg exercises, pcas, surgery specific information, preoperative preparation, shower or enema, food and fluid restrictions, minimize risk of aspiration, minimizes p/o nausea/vomiting.
