Chapter 14: conceptualizing abnormality, what are some of the general problems associated with defining a behavior as. There arent always clear up lines bw normal and abnormal behavior. Sometimes behavior that appears abnormal can turn out to be a reasonable reaction to a stressful event. Also behavior can seem abnormal in one culture yet be perfectly normal in another: describe each of the four criteria that might be used to define abnormal, discussing why each one alone is insufficient. Statistical deviance: a criterion of abnormality stating that a behavior is abnormal if it occurs infrequently among the members of a population. Most other behaviors occur with a certain probability in society at large. Ex mostly everyone yells at their neighbors. Thus a behavior that doesnt occur as frequently among ppl is abnormal according to statistical deviance. Something that is extreme or different from the average-cant be used as the sole criterion for labeling a behavior as abnormal.
