● Externalizing disorders- children who act out
○ Symptoms
■ Rule violations (someone who always gets sent to the office, doesn’t
listen to parents or teacher)
■ Underage drinking
■ Frequent, intense, and pervasive means that it’s an externalizing
syndrome happens before 12 and is more likely to persist in adulthood
■ Callousness- has no problem hurting parents, other people
■ Negative outlook towards other
■ Anger
■ Aggression
■ Impulsivity- issues with executive functioning
■ Hyperactivity
■ Attention deficits
○ Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (diagnosed in early elementary school,
executive function issues)
■ Characterized by hyperactivity and / or attention deficit
■ DSM-V categorizes this disorder under neurodevelopmental disorders
along with intellectual disabilities and autism
○ Oppositional defiant disorder (psychosocial interventions)
■ Rule breaking behaviors
■ Person purposely doesn’t listen to parents, teachers, or any adults
■ Defined by pattern of negative, hostile, and defiant behavior
■ DSM-V categorizes this disorder disruptive impulse control and conduct
disorders
○ Conduct disorder (relational aggression in girls)
■ The childhood version of antisocial disorder
■ Also falls under disruptive impulse control and conduct disorders
■ Defined by persistent and repetitive pattern of serious rule violations most
of which are illegal
■ Index offenses- illegal at any age
■ Status offenses- illegal because of youth
