PSY 105 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Long-Distance Running, Cognitive Restructuring, Sport Psychology
Document Summary
Sports psychology is a discipline that has become increasingly popular in the past 20 years. Several areas in which sports psychologists have helped athletes can be mentioned, such as maximizing the use of training sessions, improving confidence and concentration and achieving the highest performance of the athlete. Some of the statements that athletes can hear about this discipline (well, athletes and non- athletes), are clearly myths or misunderstandings. I will comment on the three most frequent: sports psychology alone can make a super sportsman. Which is a lie, since good competition is made up of four well-known areas: the physical, the tactical, the technical and the psychological. Therefore, it depends on each of them equally: sports psychologists only work with athletes in competitions. Not so, there has to be a job before the competition, during the competition and after the competition: for the mind to be really well prepared, all you have to do is talk to a psychologist.
