PSY 130 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Birth Order, Personality Disorder, Psych
Document Summary
Parental effect on personality development: as with freud, adler claimed that the first few years of adulthood was highly important in adult personality formation. Adler, however, also put great emphasis on the parents "position in that process. In particular, he described two parental habits that are almost likely to contribute to children"s personality disorders later in life. Second, parents who pay too much attention and over-protection to their kids run the risk of being pampered. Pampering robs the child of freedom, can attach inferiority to emotions, and provides the basis for many personality issues. Families should shield their child from short drives, violent playmates and scary films. As a result, the child becomes incapable of coping with many of the issues of life. You may be familiar with some of these once pampered children who have difficult living alone, making their own choices, and coping with the everyday hassles and frustrations that we all face.
