SOC 104 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Santa Barbara City College, Homeless Shelter
Document Summary
We live in communities together, we work in working groups together, we can worship together in religious groups and we can participate together on sports teams and through clubs. Affiliating with other people even strangers helps us to accomplish one fundamental goal: finding a romantic partner with whom we can have kids. Our interactions with other people also give us other resources we wouldn"t have on our own. We can go to the grocery store to buy milk or eggs and we can hire a carpenter for us to build a house. Self-concern and other-concern priorities sometimes go hand in hand. If we fall in love with someone else, it"s partly about getting in touch with someone else, but it"s also about self-concern falling in love makes us feel good about ourselves. And when we volunteer to support others in need, it"s partially to their benefit but also to us. When we support others we feel good.
