During the 1930"s, several gestalt psychologists, most notably kurt lewin, escaped to the united states from nazi germany. By developing the discipline as something different from the dominant psychiatric and psychoanalytic schools during that period, they were influential, and social psychology has always maintained the legacy of their interests by perception and cognition. Behaviors and small group dynamics were the most widely researched topics in this period. During world war ii social psychologists studied deception and propaganda for the u. s. military. After the war, scientists became interested in a variety of social problems including questions about gender and racial discrimination. The most significant, revelatory, and divisive of these were the stanley. In the sixties new subjects, such as cognitive dissonance, bystander intervention, and aggression, became increasingly alarming. But by the 1970s, social psychology in america had undergone a crisis.
