Document Summary
Sociology today relies more on studies that use big data. Rely on statistical, quantitative methods & computer programs that make it possible to analyze the vast amounts of data generated by the internet. Methods allows sociologists to process more data than ever before. W/all the scientific potential that can be seen in age of big data must be aware of potential arrogance. More confident in claims that are made from big data sets. Feel they can speak about inequality/poverty from study based on statistical correlation when never been to slum or had personal relationship w/the poor. In age of big data, empathy & involvement w/communities & ppl = not the basis of social scientific insights. Sociology has rich tradition in qualitative research methods ~ rely on observations, interviews, & archival data. Personal involvement & empathy count for a great deal. Quantitative analyses make use of numerical data.
