PSY 101 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2.1: Cold Reading, Extrasensory Perception, Karl Popper
Document Summary
Psychology began as a deliberate attempt to start a new science. Ethics is a big issue in psych because of the nature of the field and what it studies. Science is a search for knowledge based on replicable data. The ability to replicate another"s findings is important because it means that good observations and accurate measurements were made. The hypothesis may be tested in many ways, these various approaches are called methods. Fundamental to any research is measuring the outcome and determining whether the results are significant enough to hold any meaning. When researchers try to verify a small effect they use a meta-analysis which combines the results of many studies as if they were one big study. Meta-analysis determines which variations in procedure increase or decrease the effects found. Replicable results: those that anyone can obtain, at least approximately, by following the same procedures.
