Sensory coding- our sensory organs" translation of physical properties of stimuli into patterns of neural impulses. Specialized cells, called sensory receptors, receive physical or chemical stimulation and pass the information to the brain in the form of neural impulses. Qualitative information- describes the basic qualities of a stimulus. Quantitative information- consists of the degree, or magnitude, of those qualities. Coarse because sensory qualities are coded by only a few different types of receptors. Stimuli: molecules dissolved in fluid on the tongue. Receptors: cells in taste buds on the tongue. Pathways to the brain: portions of facial, glossopharyngeal, and vagus nerves.
