Each small principality generally had one ruler, often from a particular family. The sforzas in milan, the medicis in florence, the pope in rome (the papal territories), the doge in venice, the estes in ferrara, the borgias. The popes and cardinals also often came from these families. Developed in the 11th century, when the italian peninsula gained independence from the hre. In part separate realms due to italian geography. Until 1300 many were republics, and occasionally also afterwards. Major trading and commercial centers, large amounts of capital, support for the arts (renaissance) Decline in power beginning in the 16th century. Here with two cardinals, one is the nephew of lorenzo, later pope clement vii. Cathedral took some 140 years to complete (from early 14th to mid-15th century) Famous artists contributed - giotto, filippo bruneleschi. Seat of power of the republic and the medicis (until they move across the river to the palazzo pitti)
