Berger tells us why it is important for us to take images, whether popular or elite, very seriously and how the way they convey meaning differs from the written word. We see only what we look at, looking is a choice! We always look at things in relation to ourselves. Cultural mystification of the past entails a double loss: works of art are made unnecessarily remote, the past offers us fewer conclusions to complete in action. We situate ourselves in history when we see art. Man"s presence: dependent upon the promise of power which he embodies, suggests what he can do for you or to you. Woman"s presence: expresses her own attitude to herself and defines what can and cannot be done to her, very intrinsic to her person, from early childhood, she has been taught and persuaded to survey herself continuously.
