Modern day slavery as one example of these problems. Main focus today: trends in people"s welfare around the world. We will focus on monetized" dimension: how much money people have to live on. But, there are many different ways in which we could think about how people are doing e. g. nutrition (food) We will think about two ways of capturing welfare: Measures of poverty capture how people are doing in relation to a defined standard or threshold. Measures of inequality capture how people (or countries!) are doing relative to each other. We will focus on what is called extreme poverty . People are considered to be living in extreme poverty if they live on less than 1. 90 international dollars per day. = equivalent of what . 90 could buy in the us in 2011. This is extremely little, often not even enough to stave off hunger, let alone take care of housing, education, etc
