SOCIOL 2 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Global Citizenship, Nationstates
Document Summary
Political globalization involves the shift of governance to the global level. Talked about three different ways in which this happens: Global civil society (international ngos and transnational social movements) Globalization means less control over what happens inside national borders. Defining feature of globalization of all sorts is growing global interconnectedness/flows/interdependence. This has made it more difficult for nation-states to control what is going on inside international trade and investment flows undermine state"s ability to control their domestic economy. Globalization means new forms of political authority above the nation-state their borders. Igos (like un) set goals for national politics. Global civil society provides global normative frameworks that (de-) legitimize national policies. Ex: global women"s movement has made it less legitimate for countries to pursue discriminatory policies/practices. Globalization can strengthen challenges to national authority from below. Growth in global civil society has strengthened ability of national civil society actors to pressure their own governments from below by entering into transnational activist alliances.
