Document Summary

Professor jason lee: data summary: categorical variables, frequency distribution and relative frequency. Recall that data can be classified as either categorical or quantitative. Whereas quantitative data uses numerical values, categorical data uses labels or names to identify categories. This chapter introduces how to use graphs and tables to summarize both quantitative and categorical data. Definition: data visualization describes the use of graphical displays to summarize and present information about a data set. We start by looking at how categorical data can be summarized. Definition: frequency distribution is a table summary of data showing the number (frequency) of observation in each category/class. Suppose that a marketing firm conducted a survey with 50 soda consumers and asked them to list their favorite soda. One way we could organize the results of the survey would be to develop a frequency distribution for the data. We simply count the number of times each soft drink appears in the survey to get the frequency distribution.
